Charlaine Harris appeared at the Polaris 25 Convention in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, over the weekend – marking it her first Canadian appearance EVER!

E&S Lovers: Which “team” does she think is the largest one in the fandom? example: Eric lovers, Bill lovers, Quinn lovers…etc. And why does she feel that way?

Charlaine Harris: I don’t classify them because they are both my babies. I love them both equally.

E&S Lovers: Currently, you’re writing Sookie book 12…at this point of the book, what would you title it, if you had the final say?

CH: Dead Locked. Possibly the last book would be Dead End.

E&S Lovers: To promote the Sookie 12 and 13 books, will you consider touring Canada as well?

CH: I won’t say, No for Book 12, but Book 13, I would go into hiding. I’m afraid of the backlash that will wave over the fans, if it doesn’t end the way people want me to finish it. I know, I can’t please everyone…but I want to stay true to how I want it to end.

E&S Lovers: What do you think about fanfics based on your books?

CH: I don’t read it and don’t really like or understand the idea of it. I don’t want to read it in case someone says, I stole an idea from them.

Chapter Three
I enjoyed driving to work for the evening shift when it was still light outside. I turned up the radio and sang “Crazy” right along with Gnarls Barkley. I could identify.
Jason passed me driving in the opposite direction, maybe on his way to his girlfriend’s house. Michele Schubert was still hanging in the relationship. Since Jason was finally growing up, she might make something permanent with him . . . if she wanted to. Michele’s strongest suit was that she wasn’t enthralled by Jason’s (apparently) powerful bedroom mojo. If she was mooning over him and jealous of his attention, she was keeping it perfectly concealed. My hat was off to her. I waved at my brother, and he smiled back. He looked happy and unconflicted. I envied that from the bottom of my heart. There were big plusses to the way Jason approached life.
The crowd at Merlotte’s was thin again. No surprise there; a firebombing is pretty bad publicity. What if Merlotte’s couldn’t survive? What if Vic’s Redneck Roadhouse kept stealing customers? People liked Merlotte’s because it was relatively quiet, because it was relaxed, because the food was good (if limited) and the drinks were generous. Sam had always been a popular guy until the wereanimals had made their own announcement. People who had handled the vampires with cautious acceptance seemed to regard twoeys as the straws that had broken the camel’s back, so to speak.
I went into the storeroom to grab a clean apron and then into Sam’s office to stuff my purse into the deep drawer of his desk. It sure would be nice to have a little locker. I could keep my purse in it, and a change of clothes for nights when minor disasters struck, like spilled beer or a squirt of mustard.
I was taking over from Holly, who would marry Jason’s best friend Hoyt in October. This would be Holly’s second wedding, Hoyt’s first. They’d decided to go all out and have a church ceremony and a reception in the church hall afterward. I knew more about it than I wanted to know. Though the wedding wasn’t for months, Holly had already begun obsessing about details. Since her first wedding had been a justice-of-the-peace visit, this was (theoretically) her last chance to live the dream. I could imagine my grandmother’s opinion about Holly’s white wedding dress, since Holly had a little boy in school—but hey, whatever made the bride happy. White used to symbolize the virgin purity of the wearer. Now it just meant the bride had acquired an expensive and unusable dress to hang in her closet after the big day.

Charlaine Harris Says 'The Next Two Books Will Be The Last In The Series'

Charlaine Harris has told the LA Times that there will “probably” be only two more Sookie Stackhouse novels…

“Dead Reckoning,” the 12th installment in author Charlaine Harris‘ Sookie Stackhouse mystery series, is set to arrive this May — not long before the hit TV series inspired by the franchise, HBO’s “True Blood,” returns for a fourth season — but the novelist now is looking ahead to the conclusion of her long-running saga.

“Truthfully, the next two books will probably be the last two books in the series,” Harris said last week. “I still love Sookie, but I’m beginning to want to write something else, and Sookie’s kind of taken over my life. I was able to write other things for the first few years I was involved in Sookie, but then after the start of the television show she took over so much of my time because of my increased publicity obligations that it’s been very hard to write other things, and I really need to do that.”

Harris says even though she’s a regular viewer of the show, she sometimes is surprised by how graphic it can be, particularly when it comes to the amorous adventures of Sookie’s brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten).

“Of course, the television shows things that I only allude to,” Harris said. “I’ve had some moments where I have kind of covered my eyes a little bit. My gosh, there is a huge amount of skin. I guess I just don’t see that when I’m writing so much. In the books, you know Jason’s a horndog, you know that, but knowing it and seeing it are two different experiences.”

“I think all the actors are very fun,” she said. “I think Alan’s genius lies in picking the right person for the right role. They’re all talented and doing a great job. There are some plot lines that have surprised me, but I know that they know where they’re going — I just don’t know because it’s not where I went. So I can only wait to see what’s going to develop.”

How did the partnership with I-play come about? How did you get interested in making a video game based on your characters?

Charlaine: Well, I’m sure that the fact that True Blood was such a success made people more interested in my work. I-play contacted my agent and we started talking about a way to use some of my characters in a casual game, and we decided to use Dahlia Linley-Chivers whom I’ve written about in several short stories, because she’s very visual and she lives in the same world as the vampires of True Blood, but isn’t connected to them. so it seemed like a really natural thing, and I’ve really enjoyed the process.

So the people at SFX don’t need any further excuses to reprint this interview with Sookie Stackhouse creator Charlaine Harris, which originally appeared in their last vampire special, from May. I don't think the interview has been online before and I haven't seen this photo of Charlaine before...which I love, very spooky!

SFX: When True Blood first came out, you told us you were “90 per cent happy with it”. Would you stick by that figure now, or are you more or less happy with the show?
Charlaine Harris: Oh, I’m delighted with the programme. I couldn’t be happier with it, really!

SFX: How much input do you have into the storylines of the TV series?
CH: My input consists of having written the original books that the stories are taken from.

SFX: So they don’t run things past you?
CH: No, they know how to run their show and I know how to write my books.

SFX: What do you think it is about your stories, and the way they’ve been filmed, that has made them so popular?
CH: I think the advantage lies in the fact that Alan Ball is a genius. He’s such a great talent that I think everything he creates is going to be of popular interest. When he’s involved, you know it’s going to be controversial enough that people are going to want to talk about it at the water cooler, it’s going to be sensational enough, and it’s going to have a group of very talented actors.

SFX: Do you think HBO’s high production values have helped?
CH: Of course, the high production values help. HBO is a really class act and I’m very proud to be working with them.

SFX: Has the series brought new readers to the books?
CH: Yes, in the high multiples. It’s certainly brought me more male readers.

SFX: Has anything in True Blood – characters, settings or suchlike – had an influence on subsequent novels?
CH: I like to think not, because I’ve been living with the characters for many years before the show started, so they were pretty well established in my head.

Charlaine said on her facebookpage:

‘Yes, I’m starting the next Sookie. Yes, I write chapters sequentially. The book doesn’t have a name yet. I should have started it in November but I had to take some time off.’

Charlaine Harris ‘Dead Reckoning’ Cover Revealed

So, we just set out eyes on the cover for the next installment of the Sookie Stackhouse novel and it has us a bit perplexed…

Now, for the first time we see our Sookie alone on the cover. We also see the burning pages falling from the sky… possibly a nod to the working title of the book, Dead Letters.

The new title, Dead Reckoning, means predictive calculation based on inference; guesswork.

So, we will begin our investigation on the literary case of Dead Reckoning:

In the synopsis that was listed over the summer on Amazon U.K. it listed the following:

With her knack for being in trouble’s way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte’s, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. But Sookie suspects otherwise and she and Sam work together to uncover the culprit – and the twisted motive for the attack. But her attention is divided. Though she can’t ‘read’ vampires, Sookie knows her lover Eric Northman and his ‘child’ Pam well – and she realises that they are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, she is drawn into the plot -which is much more complicated than she knows. Caught up in the politics of the vampire world, Sookie will learn that she is as much of a pawn as any ordinary human – and that there is a new Queen on the board . . .

The only spoilers we know of are from the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con and they were as follows:

Harris says that Eric wants Sookie to become a vampire and tells her so in Book 11. He apparently feels that this is the next logical step. But according to Harris, “Sookie will never become a vampire.”

As you can basically tell from this synopsis and from the spoilers and the cover, there are some points of interest:

1. The coup d’etat of the Felipe/Viktor Regime.
2. Eric wants Sookie to be a Vampire, which will not allow here to be a pawn in Vampire politics, but Sookie will never allow it.
3. Continual issues with the coming out of the Were/Shifter population.

‘Dying For Daylight’ The Game : Charlaine Harris Interview

Charlaine Harris, creator of the Sookie Stackhouse series that inspired HBO’sTrue Blood TV show, has become the latest best-selling author to partner with the casual game studio. Gamezebo sat down with Charlaine to chat about the upcoming hidden object adventure game Dying for Daylight. We were joined by I-play VP of Marketing Tony Leamer as well.

How did the partnership with I-play come about? How did you get interested in making a video game based on your characters?

Charlaine: Well, I’m sure that the fact that True Blood was such a success made people more interested in my work. Let’s talk a little bit about that process. How involved have you been with the development of the game?

Charlaine: Well, I have very little knowledge of the game development process, so I have enjoyed them asking me what Dahlia looks like and things like that. And then I’ve seen the pictures and parts of the actual game, and given my input at every point on the actual storytelling in the game and in the way that the characters look.

Are you involved in writing any of the dialogue or are you more of a consultant?

Charlaine: I’m there to provide nore of an overall check of the story against the facts in Dahlia’s world.

Why do you think the character of Dahlia is a good choice to base a video game on?

Charlaine: I think Dahlia makes such a great character because she’s very action-oriented, she’s very physical and she’s very visual. She’s all about how she looks, and she wants other people to know how great she looks too. She never hesitates to take direct action, and I think that’s a really good characteristic of someone who is the protagonist of a video game.

Why do you think that supernatural themes and vampires in particular continue to be so popular these days in pop culture?

Charlaine: I can only be glad they are! I’m not really sure why the supernatural is so popular right now. Every five years or so there seems to be a big trend in literature of one kind or another and I think this has been the five years of the vampire. I don’t know how long it’s going to last, but sooner or later something will replace the vampire as the desirable supernatural creature.
